James Patterson Mast

James Patterson Mast, 83, of Taylorsville, passed away at Catawba Regional Hospice on October 4, 2016.

Mr. Mast was born on November 2, 1932, in Washington County, Virginia, son of the late Andy Patterson and Collie Mahala Mast.

He was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed fishing, working on vintage automobiles, and was a fan of NASCAR and western movies.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Georgia Oaks Mast; two brothers, Roy and Andy; and two sisters, Geraldine and Judith.

Mr. Mast leaves to carry on his legacy a son, Wilson Phelps and wife Melanie; three daughters, Nancy Powell, Sandra Shepherd, and Tamara Dew and husband Grady, all of Taylorsville; five grandchildren, Graham W. Phelps, James David Mast, William Brandon Frye, Jesse Ray Kelley, and Jason Christopher Kelley; ten great-grandchildren; two brothers, Johnny Mast of Taylorsville, and Manly Mast of Boone; two sisters, Annie Bowman of Maiden, and Carolyn Trivette of Granite Falls; a number of nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Bud Oaks.

The funeral was Friday, October 7, 2016 in the Alexander Funeral Service Chapel. Rev. Gary W. Jennings officiated. Burial was in Friendship Lutheran Church Cemetery.

The family requests, in addition to flowers, that memorials be made to Catawba Regional Hospice, 3975 Robinson Rd, Newton, NC 28658.
