Lady Cougar wallop St. Stephens 19-3 in Softball Opener Tuesday

The Alexander Central Varsity Softball Team got its 2017 season off to a winning start with a one-sided 19-3 victory over the St. Stephens Lady Indians on Tuesday, February 28.
The Lady Cougars busted the contest wide open with an 11-run frame in the top half of the seventh stanza  and rolled to the 16-run victory at the game played at St. Stephens High School in Hickory.
ACHS pounded out 25 total hits in the game, while allowing Saint just six hits on the night.
Junior catcher Brittney Krider led the Alexander hit parade with four hits and four RBI, while Kendra Mayes added four hits and three runs-batted-in.
Lanie Goforth, Caroline Maltba, Alexis Walter, and Ashley Seagle added three-hit offensive efforts for the Lady Cougars.
In the pitching circle, Kendra Mayes chalked up her first win of the season, working seven innings and allowed six hits. Mays struck out four and issued three walks.
Alexander is slated to open the 2017 home schedule this evening against Wilkes Central at Central Park in Taylorsville.
ACHS BASEBALL NINE DROPS OPENER AT MT.TABOR
Despite out-hitting Mt. Tabor 5-3 on the night, the Alexander Central Varsity Baseball Team dropped a 7-1 decision in the first game of the 2017 season on Tuesday evening.
Mt. Tabor erased a 1-0 Cougar lead with a four-run uprising in the fourth frame. The home team added three more runs in the sixth stanza.
ACHS committed three errors, leading to three of Mt. Tabor’s tallies.
At the plate, senior Matt Wilkinson homered for the Cougars’ lone run. Wilkinson led the ACHS offense with a pair of hits.
Starter Justin Cook was saddled with the pitching loss despite allowing just one hit over four innings of work. Rhyne Johnson pitched two innings of relief.
ACHS is slated to travel to South Caldwell on March 2 and will open the home schedule against the St. Stephens Indians on Friday, March 3, at Bob Gryder Stadium.
VARSITY SOCCER GRABS 5-1 WIN  OVER MAIDEN
Alexander Central’s Varsity Women’s Soccer Team took a 3-1 lead at the half and rolled to a 5-1 victory over the Maiden Blue Devils in the season opener on Tuesday evening, February 28, at Central Park.
Alexander got a pair of goals from Alyssa Matthews in the win, while Marissa Brown, Ali Goforth, and Jessica Glenn netted one goal apiece in the win.
The ACHS Soccer Team will remain at home on Thursday, March 2, when the JV and Varsity Teams host Bandys at 5 pm at Central Park.
MEN’S TENNIS SPLITS FIRST TWO CONTESTS
The ACHS Men’s Tennis Team opened the 2017 with a 1-1 record in a pair of home contests.
The Cougars opened its campaign with a 7-2 victory over the South Caldwell Spartans on Monday, February 27, at the ACHS Tennis Courts.
In singles, Carter Patterson, Jackson Barr, Brennon McDonald, Chandler Davis, and Cameron White chalked up victories against the Spartans. The doubles teams of Carter Patterson/Jackson Barr and Noah Presnell/Matt Graham earned victories for Alexander.
In exhibition play, Josh Dietrich and Caleb Bolick notched singles wins for the Cougars.
On Tuesday, ACHS opened its NPC schedule against a talented South Iredell Team in Taylorsville. In a one-sided affair, South Iredell rolled to an 8-0 win over the Cougars.
The loss evened Alexander’s record at 1-1. The Cougars are slated to host North Iredell in a NPC match on Thursday, March 2, at 4 pm.
