Town alcohol vote is July 29
Voter registration for Taylorsville residents ends July 7
The citizens of the Town of Taylorsville will decide July 29 whether or not to allow the sale of malt and mixed beverages on premise at businesses, according to Alexander County Board of Elections Director Linda Mundy.
This referendum is only for residents of Taylorsville who are registered voters. Town residents who wish to register to vote in the malt and mixed beverage election must do so by July 7 at 5 p.m. at the Alexander County Board of Elections Office or have the registration postmarked by that date. One Stop and Absentee voting will run from July 10 through July 26 at 1 p.m. The election day will be July 29 followed by Canvass Day on August 5.
The ballot will read similar to the following: “To permit the
‘on premise’ sale of malt beverages by Class A hotels, motels, and restaurants only; and to permit ‘off premises’ sales by other permitees… For or Against;” and “To permit the sale of mixed beverages in hotels, restaurants, private clubs, community theaters and convention centers…For or Against.”
For clarification, on-premise sale refers to consumption of the alcohol on the business property (restaurant, club, etc.).
Conversely, off-premise means the customer would consume the beverage away from the business property (for instance, sale of bottled beverages at a convenience store).
Note: this Town election is a completely separate topic from the proposed countywide referendum for off-premise sale of malt beverages and fortified wines, for which a petition is being circulated by Bethlehem Community pharmacist Gary Sain. If a sufficient number of names (8,083) of registered voters are obtained on the countywide petition, the Board of Elections will then hold a vote on the countywide sale of beer and wine. The deadline for signing the countywide alcohol petition is Monday,
May 26.
