On Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 7, 2016, emergency personnel responded to a two-vehicle accident involving a motorcycle and a car in front of the Cubbard Express Exxon Handy Stop in Hiddenite on NC 90 East.

The accident involved a 2000 Toyota Celica driven by Cassie Nickole Johnson, age 25 of Hiddenite, and a 2002 Honda motorcycle.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Trooper D.L. Taylor indicated that the motorcycle was traveling east on NC 90 when Johnson pulled left out of the Exxon station and onto NC 90, driving into the path of the motorcycle.

Johnson did not appear to have been injured.

UPDATE: The motorcyclist, Amando Ribas Hernandez, age 42 of Taylorsville, and a young boy, age 8, who was his passenger, were severely injured. The child’s name is being not released. Both the man and the boy were airlifted from a nearby field to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte (in separate helicopters), said Taylor.

The trooper stated that Hernandez and the boy likely had critical injuries. Hernandez received a severe head injury and leg injury. The boy also had severe leg injuries, with two or three compound fractures.

No charges have yet been filed in the incident.

Taylor said that neither party was impaired. Excessive speed was not a factor. Both Hernandez and the boy were wearing helmets.

Responding agencies included the Highway Patrol, Alexander County Sheriff’s Office, Hiddenite and Stony Point fire departments, Alexander Rescue Squad, and Alexander County EMS.
