Hilda Sue Waugh Burgess, 92, of the Drumstand Community, departed this life Monday, October 10, 2016, at her residence. She had been in declining health for eight years and seriously ill for ten days.

Born September 24, 1924, in Alexander County, Hilda was the fourth daughter of the late James Talmadge and Clemmie Dagenhart Waugh.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Garfield Burgess in 1986; and sisters, Edna Ruth Waugh in 1930, Helice W. Stevenson in 2004, and Carlene Waugh in 2005.

Bentley, Vernell B. Sharpe, and Nellie T. Burgess; a nephew, William Stevenson of Severna Park, Maryland; and a number of other relatives.

Hilda was a dedicated lifelong member of Marvin United Methodist Church, where she was active in the United Methodist Women, serving as treasurer for over 50 years. Hilda also served as the choir director as long as her health permitted, as a Sunday school teacher and worship chairperson, and as a member of the Church Council. Whatever her roles in her church, Hilda fulfilled her responsibilities with a unique willingness, selflessness, and grace.

A 1941 graduate of Stony Point High School, Hilda enjoyed a professional career with the Taylorsville Savings Bank, retiring after 27 years of service as a loan officer. She also was a stockholder at Adams Funeral Home in Taylorsville. She delighted in growing flowers and house plants, gardening, and other outdoor activities.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, October 13 at Adams Funeral Home. A service to celebrate Hilda’s life will be held on Friday, October 14, at 6:30 p.m., at Marvin United Methodist Church with the Rev. Naomi King, the Rev. The family issues special appreciation to Hilda’s caregivers for the excellent and compassionate service that they provided. It would not have been possible for her to enjoy her last months at home without the kind and dedicated care provided by Alice Campbell, Alene Keller, Mitzi Hull, Kim Hall, Sible Smith, Margie Combs, and Jennifer Williams.
