Hazel Elizabeth Barnes Lackey, 99, of Hiddenite, passed away Thursday, November 17, 2016.
Hazel was born on July, 16, 1917, in Taylorsville, daughter of the late Thomas Chaunce Barnes and Lydia Katherine Bumgarner Barnes. She was also predeceased by her husband, Jacob Moser (JM) Lackey; a daughter, Joy Lackey Sink; and five siblings.
In 1936, she graduated Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina (now UNC-Greensboro) and was retired from public work as a public school teacher. Hazel taught at Stony Point High School, Hiddenite High School, and Alexander Central.
Hazel and J.M. were instrumental in founding Hospice of Alexander County. Hazel was a member of the National Education Association and worked tirelessly with the Meals on Wheels of Alexander County. She was a member of New Salem Presbyterian Church, in Stony Point.
Hazel is survived by a daughter, Lynne Lackey Hood and husband George of Watkinsville, Georgia; a son-in-law, Ronnie Sink of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, J.D. Sink and wife Debbie of Hiddenite, Sissy Sink Rauch and husband Todd of Winston-Salem, and Kate Hood-Weber and husband David of Watkinsville, Georgia; seven great-grandchildren, Risa, Kyle, Austin and Mason Sink of Hiddenite, Riley and Tyler Rausch of Winston-Salem, and Merida Hood-Weber of Watkinsville, Georgia; and two sisters-in-law, Patsy Barnes of Asheville, and Lillian Barnes of Winston-Salem.
A funeral service will be conducted at New Salem Presbyterian Church, 4415 Old Mountain Road, Stony Point, at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, November 20, 2016. The family will receive friends, from 1:00-2:00 p.m., at New Salem prior to the service. Pastor Curtis White and Rev. Walter Fleming will officiate.
