Hattie Marie Mays Wellman

Hattie Marie Mays Wellman, 92, of Stony Point, passed away Saturday, December 3, 2016, at Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell, after a lengthy illness.

Hattie was born May 23, 1924, in Alexander County, daughter of the late William Mays and Nola Johnson Mays. She was a retired bookkeeper, and member of The Eastern Stars. She was also a member of Philadelphia United Methodist Church and the Altar Guild.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard L. Wellman Sr.; four brothers, Talley Mays, Hobert Mays, Conley Mays, and Curlee Mays; and a sister, Lois Mays Barker.

Left to cherish her memory are two sons, John Edward Wellman and Howard “Shug” Wellman, Jr., both of Stony Point; a daughter, Diane Howard of Baltimore, Maryland; seven grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 8, 2016 at Philadelphia United Methodist Church. Rev. Vance Hunt and Rev. Kristy Burnette will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m., prior to the service, at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
