Taylorsville freshman leads Falcons to 6-0 record on the week

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Pfeiffer University’s Makenzie Pennell was named the Conference Carolinas Softball Player of the Week, while King University’s Emma Hughes was tabbed the Conference Carolinas Softball Pitcher of the Week for games played Feb. 20-26, the Conference announced Tuesday.
A freshman from Taylorsville, N.C., Pennell paced the Falcons to a 6-0 week by batting .350 with two doubles, two home runs and six RBI. Her biggest performance came in a 7-6 come-from-behind win over Columbus State. Pennell went 2-for-5 with three RBI, which included a game-tying three-run bomb in the sixth inning to lead the Falcons to the comeback. Pennell also won the Player of the Week earlier this season.
Hughes, a freshman from Rogersville, Tenn., threw three complete games and racked up a 3-0 record on the week for King. In seven innings of work she gave up three unearned runs, five walks and 10 hits while striking out 14. Hughes’ best outing was in a 1-0 win over No. 11 Charleston (W.V.), as she scattered four hits and punched out four batters.
