The Alexander Central Lady Cougar Softball Team ran its early record to 2-0 with a 4-0 victory over the Wilkes Central Eagles on Friday afternoon, March 3, at Central Park in Taylorsville.

Alexander junior Chesney Millsaps tossed a complete-game in the circle, allowing just one Wilkes hit. In the shutout effort, Millsaps chalked up six strikeouts.

Kendra Mayes blasted her first HR of the season vs. Wilkes

Offensively, the Cougars managed to shake off a slow start and finished with 10 hits in the win. A Kendra Mayes homer in the second frame gave the home team a 1-0 lead early.

Alexander managed to put the game on ice in the fifth frame when the Cougars pushed across three insurance runs. Senior third baseman Caroline Maltba highlighted the frame with a pair of RBI.

On the day, Lanie Goforth and Jennifer Tipton paired hits, while Maltba added one hit and two runs-batted-in. Mayes homered for her lone hit of the contest.

JV LADY COUGAR CRUISE IN OPENER

Following the varsity game on Friday, Alexander’s JV team opened its 2017 season with an 8-0 victory at Central Park.

Behind a combined one-hitter from Raylie Stafford and Mattie Starnes, the young Lady Cougars rolled back the visitors from Moravian Falls.

Stafford tossed four hitless frames to chalk up the win in the circle. She fanned six Eagles en route to the victory. Starnes worked the final three innings to record a save.

Alexander collected 12 hits in the contest, led by Alea Seagle with three hits, three RBI, and three runs score. Mattie Starnes and Gracie Rhoney added two hits apiece.

The ACHS teams were scheduled to be on the road at South Iredell on Tuesday. Alexander is scheduled to play at Wilkes Central on Thursday, February 9, and will host North Iredell in North Piedmont Conference play on Friday, March 10, at Central Park.
