Lady Cougars topple Spartans, Titans in Varsity Clash Saturday

By D.N. PENNELL, Jr.
The Alexander Central Softball Team hosted the 2017 Varsity Clash over the past weekend and chalked up a pair of wins over solid 4A programs.
In games played Saturday, March 18, at Central Park in Taylorsville, the Lady Cougars remained perfect on the season after wins over South Caldwell and McDowell.
In the opening game of the day, ACHS got a shutout pitching effort from senior Kendra Mayes in a 4-0 victory over South Caldwell’s Lady Spartans.
Mayes carried a no-hitter into the sixth frame before giving up the first Spartan hit. She allowed just two hits on the day and ran her record to 4-0 on the season. Jenna Pittman was saddled with the mound loss for the South squad.
Alexander finished with seven hits in the win. Chesney Millsaps homered and finished with a pair of hits, while Lanie Goforth chipped in with two hits.
Game two saw the Cougars face a future conference foe McDowell on the Central Park diamond. Both South Caldwell and McDowell will be conference mates of the Cougars next season in the new NW Conference.
In the game, Chesney Millsaps ran her season record to 4-0 in a 5-1 win over the Titans. The victory pushed Alexander’s overall record to 8-0 this spring.
