Alexander’s Riddle earns medalist honors

Hunter Riddle carded a match-low score of 36 on Monday.

          Alexander Central golfer Hunter Riddle fired an even-par score of 36 to claim medalist honors in the first North Piedmont Conference match of the season played Monday, March 20, at River Oaks Golf Course in Statesville.

          Riddle edged Lake Norman’s Clayton Saunders by one shot to card the low score of the day in the match which was hosted by West Iredell High School.

          Saunders’ score of 37 led the Lake Norman team to the overall win with a team total of 157, eight shots ahead of ACHS in second place. The Cougars fired a 165 in the nine-hole match. Riddle’s 36 led the way for ACHS, while Garrison Millsaps notched a 40. Cole Carrigan and Bubba Thompson carded scores of 44 and 45 respectively for the Cougars.

          The runner-up finish marked the debut for Matt Wilson has the new ACHS Head Coach. Wilson’s Cougars will return to NPC action at Twin Oaks Golf Club on Thursday, March 23.

 

Lake Norman stops ACHS baseball win streak with 5-4 win

        The ACHS Varsity Baseball Team saw its five-game win streak come to an end with a 5-4 NPC setback in Mooresville on Monday evening, March 20.

          Despite being out-hit in the game, Lake Norman rallied from a one-run deficit with a pair of runs in the home half of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. From there, the Wildcats held off the visitors from Taylorsville for the one-run win.

          Trae Starnes pitched two innings of relief and suffered the mound loss for the Cougars. Zach Hammer made the mound start for ACHS and allowed three runs in two-plus innings of work. Justin Cook also saw mound time in the loss.

          ACHS tallied seven hits on the night, while Lake Norman finished with five tallies. Matt Wilkinson led ACHS with a pair of hits, while Tyler Campbell and Rhyne Johnson added one hit and one RBI apiece.

Lady Cougars win slugfest over Lake Norman, 15-9

          The ACHS Softball Team improved to 9-0 on the season when it completed a suspended game against Lake Norman on Monday, March 20, in Mooresville.

          The game, which started on Friday, March 17, was suspended in the first frame due to rain. When the game resumed, the Cougars tallied 19 hits and rolled to a 15-9 win over the home-standing Lady Wildcats.

          ACHS built a 9-0 lead in the first inning and held off Lake Norman the rest of the way for the victory.

          Kendra Mayes improved to 5-0 in the circle despite scattering 14 hits. She fanned four Lake Norman batters.

          Offensively, Brittney Krider led Alexander’s 19-hit effort with three hits and three RBI. Alexis Walter also tallied three hits in the win. Caroline Maltba, Mayes, Kelsea DeJarnette, and Jennifer Tipton added two RBI each for the Cougars.

ACHS Tennis Team downs Hickory

The ACHS Men’s Tennis Team picked up one of the biggest wins in school history on Monday with its 6-3 win over Hickory High School. Carter Patterson won a third-set tie breaker to win on court one for the Cougars to seal the win. Other straight set singles winners included Noah Presnell, Chandler Davis, Brennon McDonald, and Cameron White. Presnell and Matt Graham teamed up for a doubles win for Alexander. In exhibition play, the teams of Caleb Bolick & Connor Whisnant and Joshua Benfield & Drew Evans won for ACHS, while Luke Huffman grabbed a singles exhibition win. The Cougars are home today against West Iredell at 4 pm.
