Mary “Ma” Jolly Bumgarner

Mary “Ma” Jolly Bumgarner, 91, of Taylorsville, passed away on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at her residence.

She was born on October 4, 1927, in Alexander County, to the late Ralph and Minnie Fox Jolly.

Mary was a devoted member at Poplar Springs Baptist Church. She was known for her famous fried chicken and there was nothing she was more proud of than her grandchildren!

Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, Lee Jack Bumgarner; brothers, JC and Dave Jolly; sisters, Alva Jolly and Martha Adams; and a son, Timothy Bumgarner.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Cindy and husband Clifford Pennell, Danny and wife Teresa Bumgarner, and Ronnie and wife Sheila Bumgarner; brother, Lee Ray Jolly; grandchildren, Dana Short and husband Lee of Morganton, Laura Ritchie and Husband Kelly, Brandon Bumgarner and wife Lydia, Daniel Bumgarner and wife Mitzi, Amber Spicer and husband Josh, Wesley Bumgarner and wife Kayla, Emily Brown and husband Andrew, Travis Bumgarner and wife Madi, Shelley Bumgarner, and Kylie Bumgarner; 19 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at Alexander Funeral Service from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. The body will lie in state from 2:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 21, 2018 at Poplar Springs Baptist Church. The funeral service will be held on Sunday, October 21, 2018 at Poplar Springs Baptist Church starting at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Allen Fox, Rev. Rick Safriet, Rev. James Bumgarner, and Rev. Andrew Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be: Wesley, Travis, Daniel and Brandon Bumgarner, Kelly Ritchie, Lee Short, Andrew Brown, Joseph Daniels, and Josh Spicer.

Honorary Pallbearers are: Kenzee Huffman, Jim Mays, David and Teddy Adams, Mike and Craig Jolly, and Mason Bruner.

The family would like to give a special thanks to the caregiver, Sherry Hammer.
