Cougar Men topple Saint for 10th win of the season

ACHS improves to 3-0 in NWC with resounding road win

The Alexander Central Varsity Men’s Basketball Squad picked up its 10th win of the year and upped its NWC record to 3-0 with a 53-29 win over the St. Stephens Indians on Tuesday, January 8, in Hickory.
The Cougars built a 10-point advantage after one quarter, leading 15-5 following the opening stanza. ACHS completed the 34-point rout by outscoring Saint in each of the game’s four quarters.
Alexander’s offense was balanced in the win. Junior guard Jamison Benfield was the lone Cougar in double figures with 10 points. He added a team-high nine rebounds. Dawson Elder and Jem Lowrance turned in solid interior  efforts for Alexander. Elder tallied nine points and eight boards, while Lowrance contributed nine points and snared seven boards. Freshman guard Evan Presnell tallied eight points in the win.

ACHS (10-3,3-0)  shot 48 percent from the floor and out-rebounded the home team 43-27.

LADY COUGARS CONTINUE TO STRUGGLE IN LOSS
The Alexander Varsity Women’s Team faced off against the only team it has defeated this season when the Lady Cougars played St. Stephens in Tuesday’s varsity opener.
The Lady Cougars (1-12,0-3) could not capitalize on its win over Saint in the Dicks Sporting Goods Classic last month as the Lady Indians grabbed a 39-32 win on Tuesday evening.
The Lady Indians (4-9, 1-3) used a 13-2 second period to seize control of the game 19-10 at the half.
Gracie Harrington led Alexander in the loss, scoring 11 points. Nikki Hagy tallied six points and led the Cougars with 13 rebounds.
JV COUGAR MEN GRAB SECOND NWC WIN
In the first game of the day on Tuesday afternoon, the Alexander Central JV Men’s Team held off St. Stephens in the second half to take a 33-30 win.
The win upped Alexander’s Northwestern Conference record to 2-1 this season.
Grove Lowrance and Zach Herman led the young Cougars with 10 points apiece, while Dusty Sigmon added five points.
ALEXANDER HOSTS TITANS FRIDAY
The Alexander Central JV and Varsity cagers will return home  for a four-game NWC set against McDowell’s Titans this coming Friday, January 11, in Taylorsville.
Games will tip with JV women’s action at 4 pm in the JV gym. At 6 pm, varsity women’s action is set to begin in the Cougar Den.
