Jane Lee Ordaz Steele

Jane Lee Ordaz Steele passed on the evening of February 4, 2019 in Silver Bluff Nursing Facility at the age of 86.

She was born in Denver, Colorado, but spent most of her early life in Texas, where her father, Master Sergeant José Antonio Ordaz was stationed. She was married to Jack Steele of Stony Point, until his passing in 2011.

Jane was a secretary to Dr. Friedman at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC, who designed early, experimental rockets for the Space Program. She also worked as a substitute teacher over the years, while raising four children, all of whom are still living, Debbie Sutton of Canton, Carla Steele of Connecticut, Robert Steele of Statesville, and Jacqueline Steele of Hiddenite. Jane has two granddaughters, Katie Sutton of Charlotte, and McKenna Steele of Hiddenite. She also has two surviving brothers, Victor Ordaz and Donald Ordaz; and two sisters, Ella Mae Oestrich and Josie Harter.

Jane was a volunteer for Hospice and also at the Community Center in Hiddenite, and enjoyed cheering on the kids at sporting events.

A “Celebration of Jane’s Life” will be held at Silver Bluff Village and will be announced in the near future.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to your local “no-kill” animal shelter, or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
