Assault of officers occurs at Alex. Correctional Institution

On March 15, 2019, at approximately 9:33 a.m., a correctional officer at Alexander Correctional Institution was struck by an offender while doing a cell search. The situation was quickly brought under control and the correctional officer did not suffer any injuries, according to Jerry Higgins, Communication Officer for NC Dept. of Public Safety.

Roughly 11 minutes later, another correctional officer was assaulted by a second offender and suffered a superficial wound while doing a cell search. That correctional officer received outside medical treatment and returned to work shortly thereafter. No other injuries were reported.

That situation, like the first one, was quickly brought under control.

Additional cell searches were conducted through the day and the facility returned to normal operations by 2:30 p.m.

It about time the state pays these officers enough to keep and hire staff for everyone’s safety. If they had enough staff they should have had enough officers to have one with the inmate in a chair outside the cell while the other officer searched. This is on the Stated hands, I know I worked there 13 years!

They could all use way more training as well I used to have to got here multiple times a day and many of the officers seemed confused or indifferent to their job. Many of them did not appear to have sense enough to know how dangerous it is to do the jobs they are required and “trained” to do. Scary to know some of those people are responsible for the security of the facility AND they are short staffed to boot

I think it’s shallow to criticize the officers that were attacked when the article plainly says the situation was quickly contained. These officers are highly trained and work in a very hazardous workplace, they aren’t growing flowers in a greenhouse. It’s understandable that someone visiting detained friends may resent and criticize the officers there. BD, why are you visiting the jail so often?
