Neil Edwin Starnes

Neil Edwin Starnes, 82, of Hiddenite, went to be with his heavenly father Tuesday, February 23, 2021.

He was born Saturday, January 18, 1939, in Alexander County, to the late Robert Lee “Buck” Starnes and Virginia Rufty Starnes. Neil graduated from Stony Point High School and spent four years in the Air Force. He then graduated from Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

He worked as an aircraft mechanic, who could fix anything. He was a long time member of Stony Point Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher and Deacon. He was also a member of the Stony Point Masonic Lodge #593 for 50 years. He was a devoted husband, father, and Pawpaw. He was loved by so many and will be greatly missed.

In addition to his parents, Neil was preceded in death by his brother, Roger Starnes.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 60 years, Barbara Lambert Starnes; son, Michael Neil Starnes and wife Lynne and her grandson, Hayden Hall; daughter, Kathy Starnes Carpenter and husband Clay; two grandchildren, Maggie Carpenter, and Nathan Carpenter and wife Lauren; and a great-grandchild, Iris Carpenter.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 27, 2021 at Stony Point Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Rick Norman will officiate. The body will lie in state 1:00 – 6:00 p.m., Friday, February 26, 2021 at Chapman Funeral Home. There will be no formal visitation. All Covid 19 guidelines will be strictly followed. Masonic rites will be provided by Stony Point Masonic Lodge #593.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Stony Point Baptist Church Audio/Visual, PO Box 198, Stony Point, NC 28678; Stony Point Christian Ministries, PO Box 198, Stony Point, NC 28678; or Hiddenite Baptist Church Sound System, PO Box 38, Hiddenite, NC 28636.
