Raymond Lawrence Shumate, better known as “George,” of Hiddenite, passed away Tuesday, May 4, 2021, at his home.
A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 7, 2021, at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. Steve Dagenhart officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m., prior to the service at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.
George was born March 8, 1952, in Wilkes County, to Edward Coolidge and Marie Sparks Shumate of North Wilkesboro. He loved his grandsons, music (especially blues and rock and roll), basketball, and hot rods. George attended and graduated from North High. He grew up and raised his family in Wilkesboro.
George established and ran S & S Family Restaurant in Taylorsville for 34 years before passing it to his son who runs it today.
In addition to his father, George was preceded in death by two brothers, Reverend Eddie Shumate and Dennis Shumate.
George is survived by a daughter, Kimberly Shumate Livingston and husband Philip Robert Livingston III of Chapel Hill; a son, Eric Wesley Shumate and wife Melissa Shumate of Moravian Falls; his mother, Marie Sparks Shumate of North Wilkesboro; and five grandchildren, Ivan Livingston, Arthur Livingston, Daemon Butrick, Morgan Holliman, and Ethan Shumate.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.
