Man shot by home intruder

A man was shot in his home over the weekend but is expected to recover, according to Alexander County Sheriff Chad Pennell.
At approximately 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 22, 2024, the Alexander County 911 Center received a call reporting a shooting at 1170 Paul Payne Store Road in Taylorsville.
Emergency personnel, including the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office, EMS, Taylorsville Fire Department, and Alexander Rescue Squad, were immediately dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, first responders treated a man suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim, Gregory Cline, was transported to a local hospital by EMS. His condition is listed as stable and he expected to make a full recovery.
Cline was able to provide officers with a description of the suspect.
The Sheriff’s Office later arrested Samuel Deal, 45, of Taylorsville, in connection with the shooting. Deal is charged with one count of Felony Breaking And Entering, one count of Felony Larceny After Breaking And Entering, one count of Larceny Of A Firearm, one count of Felony Robbery With A Dangerous Weapon, one count of Assault With A Deadly Weapon With Intent To Kill, one count of Felony Possession Of A Firearm By Felon, two counts of Felony Possession Of Methamphetamine, and two counts of Possession Of Drug Equipment/Paraphernalia.
Deal is currently being held at the Alexander County Detention Center with no bond. His first court appearance is scheduled for September 30, 2024.
The investigation indicates that Cline returned home to find an intruder inside his residence. During the confrontation, both Mr. Cline and the intruder exchanged gunfire, resulting in Mr. Cline sustaining a minor head injury. He has since been released from the hospital.
Following the incident, law enforcement conducted an extensive manhunt, utilizing K-9 units and drones to locate the suspect. The search concluded around 10 p.m. on September 22.
