Charters of Freedom dedicated in Taylorsville
A dedication ceremony for the Charters of Freedom (the Declaration of Independence, United States Constitution, and the Bill of Rights) permanent settings, placed at Alexander County Courthouse Park a few years ago, was held Friday, May 15, 2026, at the park. Those in attendance were greeted with music by the Alexander Central High School Marching Band, the National Anthem sung by Kim Pennell, and remarks from Alexander County elected officials.
Joining County Commission Chairman Larry Yoder at the podium were Commissioners Ronnie Reese and Marty Pennell and former County Administrator Ron Lewis. Dr. David Streater and Lewis gave remarks as part of Foundation Forward, Inc., an educational non-profit that installs life-size replicas of the Charters of Freedom in locations where they are highly visible and accessible to the community.
Reese then sealed items of local importance in a time capsule located inside the Charters of Freedom installation. The capsule will be opened on the 300th anniversary of the Constitution in September 2087.
The setting of the Charters of Freedom is located in Alexander County Courthouse Park, 101 West Main Avenue, in Taylorsville.
The Declaration of Independence is one of the permanent settings at the park.
