Heat prompts EMS calls, health alerts

The Taylorsville Savings Bank thermometer on Main Avenue Drive showed a reading of 100 degrees on July 1, 2026.

Last week, forecasted heat indices ranged from 99 to 104 during July 3-6, 2026, in the area. The heat index is how hot it feels when you combine temperature and humidity.

Alexander County Emergency Medical Services Director Jeffery Sigmon stated that paramedics received four calls for heat-related illness last week. Patients ranged in age from their mid-30s to late 60s.

The NC Department of Health and Human Services has issued a “Heat Health Alert” for July 8-9 in Alexander County with a maximum heat index of 98 degrees each day.

Heat of this magnitude can be dangerous to your health, particularly for people who are more exposed to extreme heat or more sensitive to extreme heat. This includes:
• People without access to air conditioning

Steps to prevent heat-related illness
