YMCA Impact Fund Campaign underway

When families and neighbors thrive, our community is stronger. Right now, the need for stronger communities is greater than ever. When a neighbor needs support, Alexander County Family YMCA (and the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina) stand ready to help, whether it is:

• Ensuring more kids have a safe space to learn, grow, and thrive.
• Giving seniors a helping hand or a listening ear so they don’t feel isolated.
• Changing a child’s life forever by giving them an unforgettable experience at YMCA Camp Hanes.
• Giving someone a sense of hope and belonging with a financial scholarship to the Y when they need it during the most vulnerable time of their life.

And so much more.

These are a few reasons to find your “why” and give to the YMCA of NWNC’s Annual Impact Fund. With community support, the YMCA can ensure the organization’s sustainability and changing lives — while not forgetting people, connections, and hope are what matters most in our world today.

Thanks to generous donors and local partnerships, the Y is able to give families in need memberships and access to programs that provide peace of mind knowing their kids are in a safe place with positive role models, and members can come to a space where they can focus on their overall wellbeing.

Where the Donations Go

All funds donated to the Alexander County Family YMCA stay in Alexander County, said Christy Meredith, Executive Director of the local Y.

The YMCA has an extraordinary opportunity to ensure a brighter future for the community, but the Y needs your help. A gift to the Y will have a lasting impact by helping to reach more people through life-changing programs and services. For example:
• $180 gives a student the school supplies and confidence they need to start the academic year on the right foot with the Bright Beginnings program.
• $175 sends a child to one week of Summer Day Camp filled with enriching, healthy activities and positive role models.
• $225 gives a student a life-changing experience through the Achievers program that inspires them to pursue their personal goals after high school.
• $470 gives a senior one year of access to the YMCA where they can connect with new friends and improve their health.
• $1,100 sends a child to YMCA Camp Hanes for one week of outdoor education and character-building activities.
• $1,000 supports a family with a yearlong membership, so they can have access to Y facilities and programs to live healthier lives.
• $15,000 gives three cohorts of 10 cancer survivors the support to reclaim their health through LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA.

The Alexander County Family YMCA offers a wellness center, group exercise classes, outdoor track, outdoor basketball courts, Kids Zone, summer day camp, training center, personal training, a playground, adaptive programs, and locker rooms.

For teens and younger children

In a world full of isolation and unrest, it is more important than ever that young people are engaged in positive experiences in healthy, safe environments. A new Y initiative offers eligible young people ages 12-18 years old in our communities a free membership to access the Y’s fitness facilities, basketball courts, and more. If interested, ask about the Teen Referral Memberships.
The YMCA offers Kids Zone (formerly called Child Watch) to supervise children for free to members with household memberships while parents exercise. Kids Zone Jr. is available to children ages 6 weeks-5 years old. Kids Zone is available to children ages 5-11 years old.

Twenty-four hour access

A feature which debuted last month, 24/7 access to the fitness center at the Alexander County Family YMCA, provides members with greater flexibility to support healthy lifestyles on their own schedules.

This expanded access allows Alexander YMCA members to work out early in the morning, late at night, or anytime in between, outside of normal staffed hours. Members will enter the facility by swiping their YMCA membership card at the front entrance.

Ways to help

From board members to youth sports coaches to smiling greeters, volunteers are the heart of the Y. Anyone interested in volunteering with the Y or becoming a Y member may contact Christy Meredith at 828-632-9699 or email [email protected].
