Roger Winfield Starnes

Roger Winfield Starnes, 80, formerly of Hiddenite, and recently residing in Ennice, passed away Saturday, February 10, 2018 at Alleghany Memorial Hospital, in Sparta.

He was born February 24, 1937, in Alexander County, son of the late Robert Lee and Doris Virginia Rufty Starnes. Roger retired from Griffin Heating and Air and was also employed as a consultant for B&I Heating and Air.

He was a graduate from Stony Point High School and was a talented musician, masterfully playing a variety of instruments. Roger was a member of Savannah United Methodist Church in Ennice, and was also a Third Degree Master Mason and was past Master of the Stony Point Lodge #593.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Tammy Starnes Hubbard.

Roger is survived by his wife, Nellie Glasco Starnes of the home; a son, Phillip Starnes (Sarah) of Bethlehem; a daughter, Carol (Tim) Holman of Hiddenite; a brother, Neil Starnes (Barbara) of Stony Point; two step-sons, Marc Easter (Denise) of Winston-Salem, and Kent Easter (Cindy) of Hamptonville; five grandchildren, Brandy Redmon (Monty) of Statesville, Ashley and Avery Hubbard of Taylorsville, Haley Bowles (Josh) of Hiddenite, and Madison Starnes of Hiddenite; four step-grandchildren, Austin, Kenya, Karlee and Kenzee Easter; seven great-grandchildren; and the mother of his children, Betty Jo Elliott Starnes.

Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 13, 2018, at Stony Point Baptist Church, Ruritan Park Road, Stony Point. Rev. Rick Norman and Rev. Henry Cook will officiate. The family will receive friends from 5-6:50 p.m., prior to the funeral service. Masonic Rites will be held after the service. On Wednesday, February 14, 2018, at 7:00 p.m., a funeral service will be conducted at Savannah United Methodist Church, Savannah Road, Ennice. The family will receive friends at the church, from 6-7 p.m., prior to the service. Rev. David Payne will officiate. Interment will be private by the family at a later date. In view of this, they request no cut or perishable flowers be sent.
