Gerald Dale Chapman
Gerald Dale Chapman, 75, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and son, passed away on Monday, August 19, 2024, at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Catawba County.
He was born on Wednesday, August 17, 1949, in Catawba County, to Cecil Bowman Chapman and the late James L. Chapman. He lived a life of dedication and service, both to his family and community, and leaves a legacy that will not be forgotten.
Gerald was the proud owner and operator of East Side Barber Shop for an impressive 53 years, where he was known not only for his skilled craftsmanship, “digging and sweating,” but also for his warm smile and kind jovial conversation. His commitment to his craft earned him the respect and admiration of many in Taylorsville.
In addition to his career, he served his country with honor in the United States Army, a testament to his strong character and patriotic spirit.
As a devoted member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church, Gerald spent over 40 years as a Sunday School teacher, providing guidance and wisdom to countless individuals in his community. He found profound joy in sharing his faith and fostering the growth of spirituality among his peers.
In his leisure time, Gerald enjoyed golfing, traveling, watching sports, and passionately supporting the NC State Wolfpack, activities that brought him happiness and fulfillment. His ability to cherish the simple joys of life endeared him to those around him.
Family was at the heart of Gerald’s life. He relished the moments spent watching his grandchildren—Mackenzie Pearson, Drew, and Isaac Chapman—play sports, often seen as their biggest cheerleader. His beloved wife of 56 years, Kathy Hammer Chapman, stood proudly beside him, sharing in the joys of life and family. He also leaves behind a loving daughter, Sonia Pearson, and a son, Eric Chapman (April). Gerald’s family bonds extended to his mother, Cecil Chapman; brothers, Terry (Gilda), J.L. (Cathey), Dennis (Linda), and Gary Chapman (Barbara); as well as his brother and sister-in-law, Janis Clark (Craven). He also provided affection and companionship to his devoted dogs, Reese and Coco, and maintained a close-knit relationship with numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and special friends throughout his life.
